HIF SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AND SPORTS ACADEMY

The Hochalpines Institut Ftan (HIF) is an international boarding school with a strong local identity, providing excellence in education for over 230 years. Our school is attended by students from the Lower Engadine region, as well as Switzerland and around the world. It is located in a stunning alpine setting above the village of Ftan in the Romansh-speaking area of Lower Engadine. The region is situated in the southern part of Switzerland, bordering Italy and Austria. The local community includes the small village of Ftan with 500 residents, the nearby village of Scuol with 2500 residents, and other surrounding villages.

In our over 230-year history, we have consistently evolved. From our humble beginnings with 18 students from Engadine to the era as a girls-only school in the 20th century, to the establishment of one of Switzerland's first winter sports schools and our current affiliation with the global education family of Education in Motion (EiM).

Over the centuries, our educational institution has steadily grown and now, more than ever, forms a community characterized by a diversity of personalities and nationalities, a strong sense of community, and mutual respect for the individuality of all learners.

A central focus in our teaching is the promotion of values such as respect, responsibility, and kindness. These values are not mere slogans but shape our entire school climate and our approach to education. At HIF, we view education as a journey where global horizons meet local traditions, helping our students discover and develop their individual talents to contribute to a sustainable society.

Our vision: student-centred school culture

The Hochalpines Institut Ftan (HIF) is a Swiss International School and Sports Academy founded in 1793 and guided by the humanitarian traditions of Switzerland and the values of the great Swiss educators. True to their legacy, HIF fosters a student-centred school culture and caring relationships between educators and learners. This is manifested in high standards of teaching and learning, the discovery and development of individual talent and achievement within a motivating, supportive community. The school’s alpine location and the beauty of its surroundings inspire students to lead healthy, active and outdoor lives. They feel it a duty to protect this natural heritage and to promote the sustainable use of the earth’s resources in the interests of all its people. Wherever they live, work and travel, at home and internationally, they are ready to be of help in the spirit of friendly and respectful cooperation.

Our Mission: prepare students to find fulfilment in their lives

At HIF we prepare our students to go out into the world with the knowledge, intellectual skills and emotional maturity to find fulfilment in their personal lives as well as in their academic and professional careers. The school aims to promote open-mindedness, critical thinking, self-directed research and teamwork through teaching and learning with a local, national and international outlook. We challenge our students to become internationally-minded citizens with a sense of responsibility for our shared planet. We want them to understand that fairness, kindness and community spirit help to make the world a better place.

230 years of excellence in education

HIF can look back on a long history: It was founded as Institute à Porta on 1st October 1793 by teacher Andrea Rosius à Porta with a total of 18 students. Eight students came from Zuoz, three from Lavin, one from Scuol and six from Ftan, all children from wealthy Engadin families who, until then, were lacking proper educational possibilities. Andrea Rosius à Porta headed his Institute until 1829, when he handed it over to his two sons. He died in 1838. By 1829, the co-educational Institute counted 556 students.
