NACAC(The National Association for College Admission Counseling)成立于1937年,为非营利、非政府的大学招生咨询组织,也是美国最具权威和影响力的大学招生协会,在行业内享有极高声誉。

It was wonderful to see college admissions officers, counselors, famous authors such as Jeff Selingo and even CNN TV anchor woman, Soledad O’Brian, this week. But the best part of NACAC 2021 was hearing how COVID has changed college admissions. How so?

 Test Optional

College admissions officers understand that it has been very difficult for students to take SAT exams. Cornell University just announced that they will stay test-optional until 2024.

They are admitting students without test scores, but they also said that most students in that high caliber don’t have difficulties with testing so they are more likely to submit their scores. That said, when they say “we are test-optional” they literally mean it. But wait? What about for int’l students? Yes, even for international students.

 English Competency

But, there is a catch. High SAT scores obviously confirm an ESL student’s true English capability. If you bombed the SAT, then colleges still need confirmations that you can keep up with college level lectures and work. So, they are looking more closely at TOEFL scores.

They are weighing them more so than ever before. If a student attains a TOEFL score above the college median, then they are competitive. If they are lower, then the college will want to see an Initialview Interview or they may even request a zoom interview.

Case in point: Lafayette’s average TOEFL is 109. IF you score lower than 110, then submit an Initialview Interview. If you score above 110, then you are competitive enough. Overall, the more evidence there is to demonstrate your language ability, the surer the universities will be.

 Grades

在校 GPA

Asynchronous learning was incredibly difficult for our U.S. based boarding school students. Late night hours. Tests at odd times. Assignments with no help from teachers. Colleges understand that. So, they would like to see very strong grades this year and will weigh those grades going forward, more so than last year. By how much? It depends on the college.

But for example, one liberal arts college said, if the student had A’s and B’s his freshman year, but bombed sophomore year, then he earned  straight A’s in junior year, they will consider freshman year and junior year as more representative of what the student is academically capable of. But, the university needs to hear your reasoning behind the dip in grades. In other words, you need to reach out to your admissions representative via email, phone call or state your case in the Covid essay or the “Additional Information” section.

 Parents Please...

 No more Business majors!

One major theme of the conference is admissions officers stressing “Please tell your parents.. No, your child doesn’t have to major in business to make money. We have so many other departments that we have to fill with students. If everyone just targets business, we can’t accept you.”

There are many amazing opportunities to take business courses while majoring in another topic. Yes, you can major in history and still get an internship and gain work experience. Yes, you can take accounting, marketing, finance even if you are not a business major. Furthermore, if you major outside of business and engineering, chances are, your admissions chances will improve as well.

 Testing on

 the eve of deadlines

If you are retaking the SAT on 10.16, chances are you won’t receive your results until 10.26. Once you do, make a calculated decision based on the college’s reported SAT median whether to submit the score or not, then submit your application that day. Don’t wait until the last minute. As one admissions representative said, “Funny things happen on the night of Halloween (10.31), so don’t wait. Submit your application on 10.26 or 10.27.

In order to verify your scores, take a picture of your score and send an email to all 10 of your college representatives. If in doubt, you can also ask your high school counselor to download your SAT PDF report and submit it to the college requesting results by 11.1. Most colleges will accept a PDF score report from your high school counselor’s school email as “official” until the College Board is able to send out the results. Two exceptions: Penn State and Syracuse University. These two colleges require that the test scores be received directly from College Board by the deadline. Bonus: The UC’s don’t accept SAT/ACT test scores so don’t bother sending them.

In summary, score VERY high on your TOEFL if you bombed the SAT. Don’t submit your SAT if it is lower than the median. Do sign up for InitialView Interview if you are a strong interviewer. Submit your applications for EA/ED well before the 11.1 deadline.

Overall, all admissions offices agree that when in doubt, reach out to your admissions representative. Here are the admissions representatives from Tulane and UC Davis giving this information: “We know Covid and distance learning was a difficult time. Let us know about it!”

Good luck everyone!
