2024新年寄语 | 创新的起点
Dear Parents, It is hard for me to imagine that we are nearly at the end of 2023! It feels like just a few days ago I was visiting my students in the U.S. and preparing to celebrate the New Year with father and sons. It really is true that time flies, especially after we have children. Looking back on the past year and all that has happened near and far, I believe that the theme of the year ahead around the world and here at home is innovation. All we need to do is take a quick look at the news of 2023 here in China and abroad to see the incredible speed of change happening in all sectors. It is clear to see that AI is changing the way we live. It is so exciting to see what developers Demi Guo and Chen Linmeng are doing with their start-up tool: Pika and even for me the changes in ChatGPT alone have had a tremendous impact on my life personally and professionally in the last year. For many of our children, their future careers have not even been created yet. The world is changing so fast that teaching our children how to be innovators is no longer optional, it is essential. There is a great quote from a book called Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World by Tony Wagner that I have been thinking a lot about lately as I think about how to make 2024 our most innovative year yet: How can we learn to tolerate failure? How can we learn to experiment and take calculated risks? How can we learn to persevere (even when others are not pushing us to do so)? These are questions I think about as a mother, as an educator, and as a consultant to help my children, my students, and my colleagues to become the innovators they need to be to face a brighter and more exciting future. Truly, I believe innovation starts with support from home. We as parents are in an ideal position to provide our children with an environment in which they can experiment, take calculated risks, and fail. how can we create innovators? We can begin by not taking the easiest road - by giving our children time to try, by not solving their problems for them, by not communicating on their behalf, and by not making excuses for them when they fail to meet expectations. At Hyde Education, I start by understanding our students – and helping them to understand themselves - through the four elements of C.A.S.E. I absolutely believe that what makes us unique is our commitment to strengthening our students’ ability to communicate for themselves. I encourage every child to take responsibility for his learning by asking questions when he doesn’t understand. Taking ownership of his learning and his ultimate success is crucial because I know that confident students are successful students. My colleagues and I are there for them every step of the way not to “catch them if they fall” but to give them a hand to stand back up and try again. I remind myself each day as I remind you today: let us not take opportunities away from our children to speak and act for themselves because by doing so we take away their opportunity to become the young people we need to change the world. Thank you as always for your faith in Hyde Education and for your hard work as parents. Warmest wishes for a healthy and happy New Year. Jennifer Hyde Sachs
